"I am honoured to create art that respects the traditions of my ancestors from the Naikun Raven clan on Haida Gwaii."
Corey Bulpitt, a Haida artist from the Naikun Raven clan, blends traditional and contemporary influences in his work. After graduating from Langley Fine Art School in 1996, he apprenticed with his uncle, Haida artist Christian White, in 1999 and worked with renowned Haida master carver Jim Hart at the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver. Over the years, Corey has carved numerous totem poles, including a 20-foot pole for Scouts Canada, a 17-foot pole at Queen Charlotte Lodge, and a 14-foot memorial pole at the Namgis burial ground in Alert Bay, BC. He also collaborated with Maori master carver Lionel Grant in New Zealand on a pole alongside Dempsey Bob, Joe David, and Christian White.
Corey’s artistic journey has been marked by numerous accolades and exhibitions. In 2008, his red cedar Butterflymask was featured in The Gathering, a calendar highlighting prominent First Nations artists in BC. In 2012, he was part of the Beat Nation: Art, Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture exhibition curated by the Vancouver Art Gallery. Corey’s solo show AKOS in 2014, which explored his background as a graffiti artist, was exhibited at the Bill Reid Gallery. In recognition of his impact, Corey received the BC Creative Achievement Award for Aboriginal Art in 2017, further cementing his place as a leading figure in both traditional and contemporary Indigenous art
