“My passion is to share Coast Salish art with my family, community, and beyond. I am very touched when passing down this cultural legacy to my grandchildren.”Maynard Johnny, Coast Salish

Maynard Johnny is a self-taught Coast Salish artist whose journey began at the age of 17. Inspired by a deep admiration for Northwest Coast legends such as Robert Davidson, the late Art Thompson, and Mark Henderson, Maynard has developed a unique and impactful artistic voice.

Primarily focused on graphic work, Maynard’s artistic range also includes designing and creating stunning jewelry in silver and gold. His connection to wood carving has led him to create intricate masks and panels, expanding his body of work. Over the years, Maynard’s designs have earned him recognition, including awards for logos commissioned by Native organizations and companies.

A notable highlight in Maynard’s career was designing an 8-ft. by 3-ft. salmon sculpture, which was donated to the World Trade Center in New York to honor those lost in the 9/11 tragedy. He has also participated in prestigious exhibitions, including the Miniature Show at Alcheringa Gallery, the Young Bloods Show at Douglas Reynolds Gallery, and a Salish Show with Charles Elliot.

Maynard remains committed to sharing the beauty of Coast Salish art through diverse mediums, including precious metals and wood, while continuing to pass on his cultural legacy to future generations.
