“Art is my language and an expression of who I am and where I come from. Sharing my culture helps to honor and preserve it.”
Ben Houstie, a Heiltsuk Nation artist from Waglisla, British Columbia, is known for his original paintings, limited edition prints, carved cedar rattles, and paddles. His career includes collaborations with renowned artists Cheryl Hall, Robert Hall, David Gladstone, and Beau Dick. In 1988, Ben worked under Bill Reid, painting several drums of Bill's designs and 20 paddles for the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. His first painting, completed in 1977, and his first limited edition prints, released in 1987, were both sold to Leona Lattimer Gallery. Ben also contributed to the Museum of Anthropology’s "The Transforming Image" exhibition at UBC in 2000, painting several reconstructed artworks.
Born and raised along the southern coast of British Columbia, Ben’s Heiltsuk art stands out for its bold, colorful depictions of Northwest Coast symbols. He began his artistic journey at a young age, initially painting on paper and canvas before progressing to cedar carving. In recent years, he has expanded his craft to include jewelry making, using silver and gold to create stunning works that honor his culture. With a unique style that blends traditional forms with his personal vision, Ben Houstie’s work continues to captivate and celebrate his heritage.
