Bill Reid (1920-1998) was a master goldsmith, carver, sculptor, writer, and community activist, whose journey into his Haida roots shaped his artistic legacy. Born in Victoria, BC, to a Haida mother and an American father, Reid began exploring his heritage at 23, blending Haida traditions with a modernist aesthetic. His work, ranging from intimate pieces to monumental sculptures, introduced a timeless vocabulary that captivated the world.

In 2008, the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art was established to honor his contributions and celebrate the diverse cultures of the Northwest Coast. As a member of the Raven clan, Reid’s mischievous, transformative nature mirrored his artistic vision. In 1986, he received the Haida name Yaahl Sgwansung, meaning "The Only Raven," further cementing his role as a cultural bridge-builder and visionary artist.
