About the Artist - Connie Dickens (Ts'msyen, Raven Clan)
Located just below the Alaskan border is the Coast Tsimshian community of Lax Kw’alaams - also known as Port Simpson. This is where artist Connie Dickens is from, and where her roots and stories begin.
Connie was born and raised in nearby Prince Rupert, and later attended the Kitanmax School of Northwest Coast Native Art in Hazelton, BC. There, she studied for two years and first expressed her creativity through wood carving - a traditional practice that drew her closer to her cultural teachings and visual language.
As Connie and her husband, Art, raised their three children, her artistic focus naturally shifted. She began exploring drawing as a way to continue evolving her work while balancing family life. Over time, drawing became her primary medium and the foundation for the artwork she creates today.
Connie’s designs are thoughtful, fluid, and rooted in her Tsimshian identity. Her artwork now appears on clothing, tableware, and everyday pieces that invite connection to culture through daily life. Each design carries story, movement, and a sense of home.
Her work is not only art - it’s a way of keeping teachings, relationships, and belonging alive and shared.
