About the ArtistĀ - Jim Charlie (Coast Salish, Squamish Nation)
Born on the Capilano Reserve in North Vancouver, Jim Charlie is a Coast Salish artist and proud member of the Squamish Nation, whose territory extends from North and West Vancouver through to Whistler. Jim comes from a long line of makers and storytellers. His grandfather, the late Dominic Charlie, was a respected carver who shared the histories, teachings, and cultural narratives of the Salish people with him from an early ageāguidance that shaped Jimās artistic path.
Jim began carving in his youth and has now been creating Northwest Coast art for more than three decades. Though largely self-taught, he continued developing his skill through mentorship with notable carvers including Floyd Joseph, Jacob Lewis, and Gitksan master Phil Janze. His work is known for its refined, dimensional styleārooted in Coast Salish tradition yet shaped by his own thoughtful interpretations.
While Jim is particularly skilled in carving and painting bentwood boxes, his artistic practice has continued to expand. Since 2007, he has also been working in casting, creating copper and sterling silver pieces based on his small-scale wood sculptures. His artwork has been shown in galleries, commissioned by organizations, and most recently featured in a project for the Vancouver International Airport.
Jimās practice remains grounded in family lineage, cultural story, and a commitment to craftsmanship that honours both tradition and contemporary expression. His designs carry the presence of the Bear and the Killerwhaleāstrength, family, and deep connection to land and water.
